10-vehicle pile-up as bus crashes into ambulance

KUALA LUMPUR: A driver was seriously injured when his school bus collided with an ambulance and the car he was trying to overtake crashed into seven other vehicles in Dutamas Raya, Segambut, here.

In the 7.30am incident yesterday, the driver, with no passengers in the bus, was heading towards the city when he tried to overtake a car and crashed into an ambulance coming from the opposite direction, said Kuala Lumpur Investigation and Traffic Regulations staff officer DSP Abdullah Roning.

Total wreck: A car was pinned under the school bus which collided with an ambulance near Dutamas Raya Thursday. The bus driver is in critical condition.

“The impact sent the car skidding and crashing into seven other vehicles that were mostly parked along the road shoulder,” he said. “Two were taxis.”

The bus driver, in his 30s, was seriously injured and sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

MISUSE OF RED CROSS RED CRESCENT EMBLEM

The red cross & red crescent emblem is among the most widely recognized symbols in the world. Its familiarity helps to explain why many people believe — mistakenly — that it can be used by anyone for a wide variety of purposes. In fact, any unauthorized use of a red cross & red crescent symbol on a white background is prohibited internationally under the Geneva Conventions and within Malaysia by federal law.

Every day, Red Cross & Red Crescent personnel work in regions of armed conflict, disasters and health emergencies. Their ability to safely carry out their humanitarian missions and protect those in their care depends on universal acceptance of the emblem as a sign of Red Cross Red Crescent neutrality and protection. Unauthorized use of the emblem contributes to confusion over what it represents, and can put lives at risk. To prevent this, Malaysia is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions agreeing to protect the emblem and restrict its use to official Red Cross organizations and programs, as well as the medical services of their armed forces.
